Learn from their Experience: Attend the Third Annual CARe Forum

April 17, 2015 at 1:31 PM

By: Paula Griswold

Please join MACRMI at the Third Annual CARe Forum on Tuesday, May 19th from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Conference Center. You will learn from the organizations who have been implementing the Communication, Apology, and Resolution (CARe) program. CARe is an honest, transparent, and timely approach for healthcare systems and liability insurers to respond to patients and their families to resolve cases of medical harm, as an alternative to traditional medical malpractice litigation. This educational session will demonstrate the strides made in the implementation of the CARe approach at the pilot sites and new institutions adopting this approach, as well as the continued support from patient advocacy groups, hospitals, their insurers, the legal community, and statewide provider organizations.

This year’s forum will feature two key panels in which audience members will learn about the CARe model, and its benefits and challenges from those who have experienced it firsthand.

The Patient-Provider-Attorney Panel willdescribe the process in which a case was successfully resolved using the CARe approach, and highlight the benefits for the patient, the experience for the clinicians involved, and the perspectives of the attorneys from both parties.

The Risk Management Panel will describe the changes in handling adverse events in institutions that have adopted the CARe program, some of the day-to-day challenges the risk managers and patient safety team face, and ways to overcome those challenges.

You’ll also hear about MACRMI’s recent accomplishments and new resources available, as well as interim results from the study of the Massachusetts pilot hospitals’ experience

As a member of the MACRMI leadership team, I am encouraged that CARe will be better for patients and their families, and for the clinicians who care for them, but I also expect it to accelerate our learning and improvement in patient safety across healthcare organizations that adopt the approach.
